Tom. I had never read any of your books until Slow Trains to Venice, which I enjoyed immensely- partly because we did a similar trip to Venice using Interail cards at about the same time, although we used fast trains, did it all in under 2 weeks and only visited France, Switzerland and Austria on the way – but I really appreciated your story. And the thoughts behind it. We felt exactly the same about seeing Venice when we arrived – we just stood staring at the Grand Canal outside the station… and we just stayed in Venice for four days without moving on.

We were intending to do a longer Euro rail trip this year – but COVID interfered – but thank you for your book which has inspired me to write more about my own travels – and also thank you to Interail for making your tickets the same price for over 60’s as they are for 20 year olds – for those of us that never ‘did’ Europe when we were that age!

Hi Tony, I’m so sorry I have not responded to this much earlier. I’m not always on top of my website! Thanks for your feedback about STTV, I’m pleased you enjoyed it. Yes, arriving in Venice by train and stepping out of the station has to be one of the best moments possible in travel. I do hope you managed your trip last year (good about ticket prices). I’m due to go on another long Interrail trip shortly. I hope it will make another book. Anyway, thanks again for writing in and apologies once more for the incredibly long delay in getting back! Best, Tom
